Illinois Downstate (Article 3) Police Pension Calculator

Estimate your Article 3 (suburban and downstate) police pension and plan your retirement date. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is saved or sent anywhere.

Tier is based on when you first entered an Illinois police pension fund, not your current department.
Use pensionable base pay. Overtime generally does not count.
How this works is debated. The Pension Code reduces the pension of a Tier 2 officer retiring after reaching 50 by 0.5% for each month under 55, but it does not say how that applies to someone who left before 50. Ask your pension board how it handles this. Used in both the estimate and the date comparison.
Assumptions
Raises include steps and contract increases. Inflation drives the Tier 2 salary cap and Tier 2 COLA.

Birthday, anniversary, or COLA: comparing retirement dates

A few weeks can change your pension. Enter your dates to compare the retirement dates officers usually weigh, using the salary and raise assumptions above. Your tier comes from your hire date. Each date is your last day of work; your pension starts the next day.

Any year; only month and day are used.
Blank uses your first eligible date.
Tier 1 final salaryTier 1 is figured on your pay on your last day, so leaving the day a raise takes effect can raise your pension for life.
Years of serviceThe formula counts years of service, so each full year adds 2.5%. Leaving a few days short of an anniversary can cost a full year of credit.
Tier 1 increasesRetire between 50 and 55 and you get no increases until 55. Then you get a catch-up of 1/12 of 3% for every full month since your pension began, and 3% compounded each January after that.
Tier 2 increasesStart on the January 1 on or after the later of age 60 or your first year retired. Leaving at year end can move your first increase up a full year.

Estimates only, for general information and planning. Based on the Downstate Police Article of the Illinois Pension Code (40 ILCS 5/Art. 3), which covers suburban and downstate municipal police. It does not apply to Chicago police (Article 5), sheriff's deputies in IMRF SLEP, or State Police. Assumes the 2026 Tier 2 pensionable salary cap of $145,649.97, a Tier 2 final average salary based on your last 4 years, whole years of service as the statute counts them (40 ILCS 5/3-111), salary caps applied by calendar year, and today's law; pending legislation that would change Tier 2 is not reflected. Disability, survivor, reciprocal, purchased, and transferred service are not included. The chart uses whole ages; the date comparison uses exact dates. Your local pension board determines your actual benefit. This is not financial or legal advice.
